Two days passed, and Bhaltair didn't feel any better. He hadn't expected to feel better, that was true, but he thought that he was doing the right thing and that at least that would comfort him in his pain. He was keeping Étaín safe from violence. He was making sure that she would find someone whom her brother could approve of. And yet the words he'd said to her, the look on her face when he told her them, still burned inside him as if he’d swallowed embers.

He wasn't sure what had passed in those two days, but around him there was a flurry of activity getting ready for the feast. As for himself, he barely spoke to anyone. He barely did anything. He felt like a ghost floating through the halls of Stuart Castle until one evening, Marcus pulled him into the library and thrust of glass of whisky into his hand.
